Afrocentric Art

My artwork takes a critical analysis on how society allows “sensitive subjects” to manifest. I would like the work to make the viewer consider how sensitive subjects are being presented especially ethnicity and gender. It needs to make the viewer consider whether society does not want to change the depiction of ethnicity and gender.  Afrocentric ethnic culture is about moving away from the stereotypes but to celebrate the struggles, hardship and perseverance of the black woman. I want to explore and bring to light the true beauty of what makes the black woman, the texture that is her hair down to the strong spirituality that connects her with life itself. By combining different mediums such as fluid painting and acrylic paints, my flat painting style with a light cartoonish style emphasize the “sensitive” subject I’m trying to touch upon. By bringing about a 3D element using fluid paints, will help people to scrutinise and uncover the beauty of the texture of the black woman’s hair, and how she should be encouraged to wear her hair with pride and dignity.
